Conservatives on Camden Council have taken a clear stance against Labour's proposed Council Tax rise of nearly 5% - in stark contrast to Liberal Democrats who shirked the issue by abstaining.
Pierre Andrews, Deputy Chair (Political) for HSP Conservatives, said:
"How disappointed residents of Belsize, Fortune Green and Hampstead Town must be, to have seen their Liberal Democrat Councillors abstain on Monday's Camden Council budget setting meeting. Labour's proposal to raise Council Tax by the maximum of 4.99% is completely out of touch with local residents who, now more than ever, are making difficult decisions about what to spend their income and savings on. Our Conservative Councillors proposed a considerate and carefully calculated alternative, of an increase of just 1.5%, by sharing services with other central London boroughs, as well as renting the top two floors of 5 St Pancras Square. All Councillors in touch with their voters would have been happy to support our proposal. Local taxpayers must be looking on in envy at Kensington and Chelsea's plans to freeze their part of Council Tax and to make a one-off £100 payment to all households in Bands A to D - as Camden are, of course, free to do."
